Karkaar is the name of series of mountains in Northeast portion of
Somalia.
It is also the name of an administrative region defined by the self-declared autonomous state of
Puntland. This territory occupies the south of what has traditionally been the
Bari region of Somalia and generally lies south of the Karkaar mountain range.
Karkaar has five districts of: Gardo District, Bandar Beila, Hafun, Wa'iye, Rako.
The region has population of almost 150,000 and is economically dependent on livestock and seasonal fishing (for its coastal districts).
